Rundāle is the finest baroque palace in the Baltics, designed by Francesco Rastrelli — the same architect behind St Petersburg's Winter Palace. Built as the summer residence of the Duke of Courland between 1736 and 1768, it survived wars and Soviet neglect to be restored into something genuinely world-class.

Distance: 123 km, about 1 hour 45 minutes from Riga (across the open Schengen border)
Nothing prepares you for the Hill of Crosses. Hundreds of thousands of crosses — from towering carved monuments to tiny rosaries — cover a small hill near Šiauliai in northern Lithuania. Crosses first appeared here centuries ago; under Soviet rule the site was bulldozed repeatedly, and Lithuanians defiantly rebuilt it every time, making it a symbol of peaceful resistance.
Pope John Paul II's visit in 1993 made it world-famous, and Lithuanian cross-making is now recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. 4. Līgatne Soviet Nuclear Bunker — the Cold War, Nine Metres Down
Distance: 75 km, about 1 hour 15 minutes from Riga
Under an ordinary rehabilitation hospital in the quiet village of Līgatne hides a 1980s nuclear bunker built for the Soviet elite of Latvia — a fully equipped underground command centre with diesel generators, air filtration and direct lines to Moscow. It remained classified until 2003.
Today you tour it exactly as it was left: period furniture, propaganda posters, maps and all.
