Top Adrenaline Activities in Latvia: Bobsleigh, Wind Tunnel & More
Latvia: Europe's Most Underrated Adrenaline Destination
Nobody flies to Latvia expecting an extreme-sports playground. Then they discover a country with a genuine Olympic bobsleigh track open to the public, Eastern Europe's first vertical wind tunnel, endless forest for off-road riding, and a river running straight through the capital fast enough for jet boats. Here's what to book, season by season.
1. Olympic Bobsleigh in Sigulda — the Flagship
The Sigulda bobsleigh and luge track is the real thing — a competition venue where national teams train — and it's open to visitors. This is the experience you literally cannot have in most countries:
- Winter (November–March): ride a real bobsleigh piloted by a professional at up to 125 km/h. Sixty seconds of pure G-force.
- Summer (May–October): the wheeled "soft bob" takes the same ice-free track at up to 85 km/h — still fast enough to rearrange your face.
Every ride is professionally piloted and fully supervised. Book the Bobsleigh Experience with return transport from Riga included.
2. Aerodium Vertical Wind Tunnel — Learn to Fly
Just outside Sigulda stands the Aerodium — the first vertical wind tunnel in Eastern Europe, famous for flying acrobats above the stage at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics closing ceremony. A propeller blasts air upward at up to 200 km/h and you float on it, guided by an instructor, like a skydiver who never has to land.
No experience needed, and it's open to almost everyone (from age 4). Open May to October — pair it with the bobsleigh's summer season for a full Sigulda adrenaline day via the Aerodium experience.
3. Quad Biking Through Baltic Forests
Latvia is half forest, and the best way through it is on four wheels with a throttle. Our Quad Bike Off-Road Safari runs muddy forest trails, sand tracks and water crossings — with full kit (helmet, overalls, boots) and instruction provided. Expect to come back filthy and grinning. A standard driving license is required.
4. Turbo Jet Boat on the Daugava
Right in Riga, no transfer needed: the Turbo Jet Boat throws 360-degree spins and full-throttle runs on the Daugava river with the city skyline as the backdrop. Short, violent, brilliant — the perfect gap-filler between afternoon plans and dinner.
5. Real Gun Shooting — the One They All Talk About
Latvia lets tourists fire real firearms — AK-47, Glock, pump-action shotgun — at licensed ranges with no gun license required, just ID and an instructor. It's the activity visitors from the UK and Scandinavia simply cannot do at home. Full details in our shooting guide, or go straight to the Shooting Experience.
6. Wheel-to-Wheel: Karting and Team Battles
Rounding out the menu: indoor go-karting (all-weather, genuinely quick karts), paintball warfare in purpose-built arenas, and bubble football for the funniest hour of your trip.
Summer vs Winter: When to Come
- Summer (May–October): everything is open — wheelbob, Aerodium, quads, jet boat, plus long northern daylight until 10 pm in June
- Winter (November–March): the full-speed Olympic bobsleigh is the crown jewel; karting, shooting and escape rooms keep the indoor menu strong
The honest answer: Latvia works year-round, and the bobsleigh alone justifies a winter trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can tourists really ride the Olympic bobsleigh track in Latvia?
Yes — the Sigulda track offers public rides: professional-piloted bobsleigh in winter and the wheeled soft-bob in summer. It's one of very few Olympic tracks in the world open to visitors.
How fast does the bobsleigh go?
Up to around 125 km/h in winter and 85 km/h on summer wheels.
Do I need experience for the wind tunnel?
None. Instructors fly with you, and first-timers are stable within minutes.
Are these activities suitable for stag groups?
They're built for them — most of our stag itineraries combine two or three of these in a single day with door-to-door transport. See our stag planning guide.
